Assignment:Native American Research Assignment

1. Today you will be researching on any two Native American tribes of your choice. Follow the guidelines below to complete this task. You may work alone or with a partner. If you do not finish this assignment you must complete it for homework and it is due on Monday September 29, 2003.


2. Type in the following WEB page http://www.tolatsga.org/Compacts.html (this WEB page is also at my WEB site)


3. Read the quote by Luther Standing Bear/ Lakota and write down what you believe he meant by it (Question #1 Below)


4. Scroll down the page and read the brief summaries on the possible selections (Tribes). Once you have decided which two tribes you are going to research you are ready to begin the assignment. You may write directly on this sheet of paper, Email your responses to your home and or write your answers on a sheet of paper to be typed later.


Assignment Questions


1. In your own words, what do you think the quote by Luther Standing Bear meant?


2. What is the name of your tribe and how did it originate? Is there an English translation for it and if so please document it? Did they have various names and if so what were they?


3. What language/languages did they speak?


4. Give the geographic location of your tribe and if they migrated or if they were nomadic where else could they be found?


5. Document the estimated population of your tribe and the various branches of your tribe.


6. Identify 5 interesting facts about your tribe’s culture.

7. Write a short summary of your tribes history.

Writing Assignment


The purpose of this writing assignment is to share your thoughts on what you believe an American is.  You have read numerous essays, researched quotes and viewed a 20/20 segment on Is America #1 which should help you formulate your own views and opinions on what an American is.  Down below you will read the requirements for this writing assignment.  It is important to read the requirements and due dates carefully…

Requirements
1.The length to your response should be no less than 3 paragraphs and no more than 6. 
2.I would REALLY prefer that you type and double space your work.  If technology is not available at home, you may write in cursive, but please skip lines when doing so.
3.Make sure your name date and period are on the top right hand corner. You may create your own title to your writing assignment or simply title the work “What is an American?”
4.Within your response, you are to include a quote or definition.  It may be one that you researched and or read in class.  If you wish to research further and find something new that is fine too.  I will also accept a definition as well. 
5.The total point value for this writing assignment is 100 points!!!

Due Dates for assignment

1.Rough Draft Due Dates:  Odd periods (3 & 5) Tuesday Sept 13 and Even Periods (2, 4, 6) Wednesday Sept 14. 
2.Final Draft Due Dates:  Odd periods (3 & 5) Thursday Sept 15 and Even Periods (2,4,6) Friday September 16.

* When turning in your final draft essay you are to include the following in class assignments which will have a separate point value from the essay.  Please make sure that you assemble your papers in this order: Your first page should be your final draft (100 pts) followed by the following assignments: Your rough draft (30 pts), what is an American notes (10 pts), your quotes and definition (10pts) and finally your notes on the news segment “Is America # 1?” (10 pts)…Good Luck and I look forward to a good read!!
